Why We Don't Charge Monthly Fees

By Jay Durango March 7, 2026 6 min read

Let's cut the shit. You're paying $30, $50, $100+ per month for software that hasn't meaningfully changed since you first subscribed. The company ships a dark mode update and calls it a "major release." Meanwhile, your credit card gets hit like clockwork.

We built JRD Connect on a different principle: you buy it, you own it. One payment. Forever. No renewal anxiety, no "your trial is expiring" emails, no feature gates designed to upsell you into a tier you don't need.

The Subscription Tax

Here's what subscription software actually costs when you zoom out:

Software Monthly Year 1 Year 3 Year 5
Mitchell1 ProDemand $300+/mo $3,600 $10,800 $18,000
Tekmetric $200+/mo $2,400 $7,200 $12,000
RepairShopr $60+/mo $720 $2,160 $3,600
JRD Garage $0/mo $99 total $99 total $99 total

That's not a typo. JRD Garage costs $99 one time. The same features — work orders, CRM, parts tracking, scheduling — for a fraction of what you'd spend in a single month elsewhere.

How We Make It Work

The obvious question: how can you sell software for a one-time fee and keep the lights on?

Simple. We have no lights to keep on.

Our entire backend runs on Cloudflare Workers — a serverless platform with a generous free tier. No AWS bills, no server maintenance, no DevOps team. Our infrastructure cost is literally $0 per month regardless of how many customers we have.

When your hosting cost is zero, every sale is nearly pure margin. We don't need recurring revenue to cover recurring costs — because there are no recurring costs.

This isn't a startup burning through VC money with a "figure out monetization later" plan. This is a profitable software business from sale one.

Why SaaS Companies Charge Monthly

SaaS companies charge subscriptions because:

  1. Server costs are real — Running on AWS/GCP/Azure racks up massive bills. They pass that to you.
  2. Investor pressure — VCs love MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue). It inflates valuations. Your subscription funds their next funding round.
  3. Artificial lock-in — Once you're in the subscription, switching costs keep you there. Your data is hostage.
  4. Feature gating — They ship the full product but hide features behind tiers so you pay more for what should be included.

None of these serve you. They serve the company and its investors.

The One-Time Purchase Advantage

The Future is Own, Not Rent

Subscription fatigue is real. People are tired of death-by-a-thousand-cuts monthly charges for every piece of software they touch. We think the best software is the kind you buy once and use forever — like a tool, not a lease.

That's why we built JRD Connect. And that's why we'll never charge you monthly.
